Exercise 1: Back to the Future

Week 1

In the first class of the week, we were introduced to Photoshop as well as some of the basic tools that will be used often. A few of the tools that were introduced to us are the masking tool, clone stamp tool, and some other tools which will be used in our exercises. After the lecture, we were asked to go to the Mac Lab so we can try using the tools immediately. We were shown how to used the mask tool to select certain areas on a black and white picture in order to color it. Once shown, we tried it to do it on our own. Our first assignment was to restore the colors on a black and white picture. For this assignment, I chose a black and white picture of Emma Watson which I searched online.
1.a. British actress Emma Watson
I also searched for two colored picture of my subject to be used as references.

1.b. Emma Watson on Oscars

1.c. Emma Watson on Noah's movie premiere

I started off by converting the black and white picture I have from RGB mode to CYMK mode. Afterwards, I clicked on the Quick Mask Tool and then I used the brush to draw on areas that I wanted to mask. I also lower the brush's hardness for it to have soft edges.

1.d. Drawing on areas to be masked on Photoshop
The next step after drawing on selected areas, I clicked the Quick Mask Tool and then add a Fill Layer which I chose Solid Colors and also choose the color that I wanted. Then I set the Blending Mode to Colors.

1.e. Adding a Fill Layer on Photoshop
1.f. Setting the Blending Mode to Colors
I then repeat the same steps for the rest of the areas that needs coloring.

1.g. Adding white color on the shirt

1.h. Adding the hair color, skin tone, and other parts of the picture
After coloring the areas with basic colors, I begin adding more colors to the hair, skin, and background to bring the picture better to life by getting color references from the reference pictures. I slightly change the contrast of the picture in the middle of coloring it because I think it looked better that way.

1.i. The result after changing the contrast by a small amount
Here is the final product.

1.j. A colored picture of Emma Watson
1.k. A before and after comparison
Since I'm restoring colors on a black and white picture of a person, I used a lot of colors for the skin tone as well as other parts of the face. Below are the color swatches that I used.

Exercise 2: Dali Atomicus, Galconda, and Man on the Moon

Week 2

On week 2, we worked on exercises based on Dali Atomicus's work which is creating a surrealistic photo montage by combining organic and inorganic objects.
Fig. 2.a Dali Atomicus's work
So then we searched online for a couple of picture for our exercise. Then we started to mask each of the picture and placing it together.

Afterwards, we edited a little to make it look more real.

Exercise 3: Changing One's Stripe

For this exercise we are required to interchange the characteristic of two animals.

Week 3

On week three, we starting to move in to surrealism. The exercise that we're doing for this week are to edit arms on birds and try to make it as real as possible. We were asked to search for pictures of birds and arms online. Here are the pictures I used for my first try.

Fig. 3.b A picture of a girl
So I first masked the arms of the girl, then insert it on the bird. It's a good thing that I found a similar colored arm that fits the color of the bird's feathers.

Week 4

On week 4, we still practice on surrealism in class where we were given the link to the same picture and we were taught how to make a picture of a house that's taken on daylight look real on night time.
Fig. 4.a Picture of a house
Fig. 4.b Picture of night sky

The first thing we do is to place the image inside the image of the sky.
Fig. 4.c Placing the image inside
Select the image of the house, go to Image, Adjustment, and click on Match Color where the source would be the sky.
Fig. 4.d Matching the color of the house
Try to adjust blending modes and other effects to make it look real. You can also duplicate layer and place it on top while decreasing the opacity.

Fig. 4.f adjusting the blending modes on the female ghost
Afterwards we basically just adjust the blending modes and opacity to make it look real,
This is my final work.

Moving on to the second exercise using the same method. We also used dodge tool to lighten or darken certain areas.

Week 5

On week 5, we continued on this exercise's requirements where we were introduced to displacement. We were asked to try and place a flag on a picture of a silk and make it seem like it is printed on the silk. So we searched for pictures of a silk cloth and a flag of any country and open the picture of the silk on Photoshop. Then we change the color of the silk to grayscale then save it as a .psd file with the name Displacement

Throughout the whole class we were asked to practice on our own where we tried to make car doors look like crumpled paper, spray writings on grass, etc.

For my submission for this exercise, I decided to change the skin texture of a man.

Exercise 4: Castle of Pyrenees

Week 6

For the exercise, we were asked to create a surrealistic science defying image. We first searched for references online. Then we started to work on it. For this exercise, I decided to use this picture.
Fig. 5.a Reference
We were also asked to make a GIF of the process of our work. So I used a few picture that I found online. The rest of the picture can be found in my Google Drive Link.
Fig. 5.b Picture of a girl reading a book
Fig. 5.c Painting of a whale
Fig. 5.d Picture of a shark
I masked out the sharks and animals and other elements that I will be using.
Fig. 5.e Masking the fishes
After masking all the elements, I started placing them together and adjusting blending modes and opacity to make it look as real as possible.
Fig. 5.f Placing all the elements together and blending
I then added clouds and sunlight to make it all look better.
Fig. 5.g Added clouds
Finally, I adjusted the brightness, etc.
Fig. 5.h After adjusting the brightness, exposure, etc.
To then make an animated GIF of my work's process, I go to Window then clicked on Timeline and started editing frames for the GIF.

Here's my final work for this exercise.
