Project 1: Decisive Moment

Week 5

On the fifth week, Mr. Hafiz introduced us to art deco posters where he showed us some examples. Afterwards we were asked to search for urban legends where we will be asked to visualize a certain turning point in the story that we chose. This will be our first project which is Project 1: Decisive Moment.

We went on the internet to search a few urban legends that we wanted to choose as our story. The first story I chose was The Legend of Atlantis and I did a few sketches, a mind map, and researched on my mood board.

However, after posting it on Google+, Mr. Hafiz said that The Legend of Atlantis was not very urban legend so I went on and searched for another urban legend. The urban legend that I found afterwards, which I will be using for this project is titled The Choking Doberman. The story goes on about how a couple who came back from a party found their dog choking. They brought they dog to the vet and the vet found a man's finger that caused the dog to choke. While reading this story, I immediately have an idea for the turning point which I will be illustrating, which is the moment when the man came back from the party and found their dog choking. So then I did sketches, mind map, and a mood board for it.

By the end of the class, Mr. Hafiz wanted us to show our sketches on our next class so we can start illustrating it on illustrator.

Week 6

On the sixth week, Mr. Hafiz started the class by giving us an exercise which is to trace a chiaroscuro picture of two man.

We started tracing the character in the picture and gave color to it. Then we were asked to post it on Google+, the final result of the exercise and the outline.

After we're done with the exercise, Mr. Hafiz wanted to see our sketch for our urban legend and that we should start tracing it on illustrator. The first sketches that I drew were not very good and I did a lot of practice on the dog as I can't draw animals really well, so I also searched for some dog references online.

Throughout the week, I kept on sketching to perfect the way I draw the dog.

Then I came up with this poster. Something was still a little bit off and I was not able to finish my character in the story so while waiting for my feedback from Mr. Hafiz, I tried to work on it. But in the middle of working on my character, I decided to change the poster that I planned to submit but I didn't post it on Google+ yet until I received a feedback from Mr. Hafiz.

When Mr. Hafiz saw my work, he told me to try and work on a different perspective and that I don't need to include too much detail. So this is what I worked on during class and he said I should continue working on this one instead of the previous one. But I was asked to change my dog character as it looked demonic. I was also asked to try and not place the human character too far at the top of the page.

After the feedback, this is the poster that I came up with but I'm still trying to work on it because there seem to be too much detail on the dog and the character don't look good at all. Below are also a few additional sketches.

On Thursday, Mr. Hafiz explained and showed us examples of animated GIFs and he told us that as design students we have to learn how to animate and not just simple draw or illustrate as generations now are more modernized than before. When it was still around 2009, being able to animate is like a plus and it's not really a skill that's required when you dive into the working world. However, now, being able to animate is like a requirement. Mr. Hafiz also posted a lot of links on examples of GIFs. He also asked us to try out Adobe Muse for publishing with animated GIFs.

We were of course asked to make an animated GIF of our poster. I was still unsatisfied with my last poster so I decided to work on a new one. again.
Fig. 3.c Poster 1
The first picture was the first poster I did, with visible grain texture. However, when I animated and exported it, the grains suddenly turn very big and visible and it moves when the picture moves. So I tried to redo a lot of times and adjust the grain texture but I just can't seem to fix the problem. Which then I decided to use soft grains with very little intensity and came up with the another poster.
Fig. 3.d Poster 2

It doesn't really look good with little grains but when it is animated, it's less distracting when the grain texture don't move along. Below are the GIFs.

Turns out, the grains on the GIF doesn't really stand out when I posted it compared to when I viewed it directly on my computer so I decided to submit these as my final work.
