Project 1: Surrealistic Animated GIF Art

Week 8

On week 8, we started to get into After Effects. Mr. Jeff introduced us to some basic skills in After Effect where we mask, and make an astronaut move.
Fig. 1.a Picture of an astronaut
We were taught how to change the position, scale, opacity, or even rotate, the astronaut after masking it and placing it on different background on After Effects.

A week before, we were also asked to take pictures on green screen which we will be using for our next exercise.
Here are the links to the pictures that I took.
So we used the picture that we took and tried to recreate another Dali Atomicus's work, the photo montage. These are the pictures that I used.

We were taught how to get rid of the green screen by using Keylight in After Effects which means we have less jobs in doing the masking. I used the picture of the apartment as the background, moving on to masking the astronaut. Then I used keylight to mask the picture of Kim jumping and the water. After placing all together, I started to animate the picture.

Week 9

On week 9, we were introduced to the Puppet Pin tool in After Effects, where it allows us to move a static object. However we must pay attention when using this tool as it distorts the image.
We were asked to search for pictures of ink and try to make it move using the puppet pin tool.

Here's how I animated it.

We were also taught on how to loop a moving object. For this exercise, we were asked to create patterns of clouds on Photoshop. So first we create a really long canvas. so that it can be moved in After Effects. Then we go to Filter, Render, and select Clouds.

Fig. 2.c Clouds formec
When the clouds are formed, you can either adjust the colors in Photoshop or in After Effects. Export the clouds into .png files.
Open the file on After Effects and duplicate the clouds so there are four layers. Change the blending mode to Multiply so the layers can be seen. Start moving the positions in After Effects. Afterwards, select all the layers and go to Edit and click on Pre-compose. Change the name to loop. Once it's only a single later, split the layer in half, moving the last end of the layer to the front and the front layer to the back but still overlapping with the end layer. Then adjust the opacity of the end layer (which is in the front) from 100% to 0% (where it ends). Make sure that there's quite an amount of time before it completely fades to make it look as natural as possible.
Here's what mine look like.

Week 10

On week 10, we should already started on our project which is to recreate a surrealism painting with our own pictures. But since I haven't taken any picture yet, I decided to rework on some of my exercises. Here's what I did with After Effects.

Week 11

By this week, I already have my pictures taken and started doing my project. The painting that I decided to recreate is Smoke by Rene Schute.

Here are the picture that I took.

Fig. 3.d Picture of the sky as background
I started out by masking all the objects that needed to be masked, then I placed them together in Photoshop. Afterwards I opened the Photoshop file on After Effects and imported the layers on by one so I can move the layers individually. We were asked to export the file into GIF so that it can be sent through whatsapp, where we will be importing the .MOV file to Photoshop and exporting it into GIF in Photoshop. Here's what my final work looked like.

 Here's the .MOV file.
