On the first week of class, Ms. Anis briefed us on what we need to do for the whole semester. Below is the module outline.
One thing that was introduced to us is that there will be a "FLIP" classroom where instead of Ms. Anis giving the lecture, we will be the one to do it. Ms. Anis told us that we can find the topics in the module outline itself. Ms. Anis then started briefing us on our first individual project which is, again, to create a poster. But this time, it won't be just any poster. We will need to create a poster based on the problems that we can see on campus, preferably something we experienced that we think is a problem that affected us a lot in order for us to really know the problem. Researches should also be done before creating the poster.
Ms. Anis also mentioned about guerilla marketing kind of design which she wanted us to try and read about. So I did some research on it and found some really interesting examples of marketing that uses guerilla technique which I can use as reference and inspiration.

Throughout the day, I was staying around campus and since I always used the bathroom. I've always hated going in to a bathroom with wet floors, wet toilet seat (no idea how people use it), toilet bowls that are not flushed after use, disgusting spread of excretion all over the toilet bowl, etc. I happen to went into one that is pretty unhygienic which then gave me the idea to work on a poster related to toilet hygiene in my campus because I feel like this is really something that causes the most discomfort for me in campus.

On the second week of class, Ms. Anis gave us a lecture on Ethics in Design.
After the lecture, Ms. Anis gave us an exercise where we were asked to look for visual instructions that uses design considerations into good consideration. Me and my group thought about Lego at first but other groups took it so we changed to Flight Safety Instructions.
After the exercise, Ms. Anis wanted us to present to her individually on what we decided on for our topic for project 1. Before that, Ms. Anis showed us a few examples on the works done by seniors. After getting our topic approved, Ms. Anis dismissed us and wanted us to start doing research and work on our first project.

September 12 2018
On the third week of class, Ms. Anis gave us a lecture on Social Class Transformation.
After the lecture, as usual, Ms. Anis gave us a short group exercise where we were asked to try and think about where a man from 1900s who is transported to 1950s will experience greater impact or whether a man from 1950s who is transported to present era will experience the greater impact in terms of economic, social, entertainment, technology, health, and transportation. This is what my group came up with after our discussion.

On the fourth week of class, Ms. Anis gave us a lecture on Creative Class.
As usual, followed by a group exercise.
We were to look for famous designs, photography, illustrations, etc. from different eras and analyze what the trend was and present it in class. Here's what my group did.

On the fifth week, we were given a lecture on Culture Jamming.
We were given a group exercise to look for 3 subvertisement on commercial, political and social issues. This is what me and my group found where we had to present in front of class.
P R O G R E S S
For my project 1 I decided to work on the topic of toilet hygiene because it's what causes discomfort to me throughout my time on campus. The toilet hygiene that I decided to focus on is more on the usage of the toilet seat and I would like to focus on women toilet since I only use women toilet. I read a lot of researches and articles online and came to learn how women actually use public toilet which is the reason why there are ridiculous stains on the toilet seats. I started to take pictures of the toilet for me to start working on my poster. My first draft of the poster looked something like this, where I showed to Ms. Anis to ask for feedback and I was asked to change the tagline.
So basically my idea was to create a poster that can trigger and impact the audience, making them reflect on their etiquette when using the toilet. I was inspired by a video that I watched before on YouTube which I tried to search for it again and found it to be a video standing up for women empowerment due to the Nirbhaya Gang Rape case that happened a few years back in India which shook the whole country. Attached below is the video.

I learned from the video that people tend to think twice and will be more self-conscious where they will be ashamed of doing something bad whenever they see themselves doing it. This whole concept is what I wanted to implement in my poster. I wanted there to be a mirror in the middle of the closet where the idea was for the poster to be posted in the walls inside the toilet stalls so that people will remember to clean up after themselves whenever they see the poster.
My initial idea was for the poster to be an interactive one, so it will be a flip poster but I thought maybe I should directly show the reality instead of trying to hide it first. This was my first mind map.

That was until I thought about using a mirror which is why I made another mind map after results of researching and really having a solid idea on what I wanted to do.

Ms. Anis liked my idea when I consulted her so I decided to proceed with it. While doing the poster though I sort of regret choosing this topic because I have to look for references online on pictures of dirty toilet so it was quite a struggle doing it as I also painted all the turds and everything since no one take a clear picture of dirty toilet bowls (I mean, who does that). So by looking at references, I used the brush tool to try and draw it as real as possible. Below is my final look on the poster digitally. I also decided to combine both my first idea and my second idea. Reason being, I was given an advise to try not to directly show a poster that's too disgusting as people tend to avoid disgusting things so my purpose of having people to reflect from the poster might backfire which is why I decided to do a flip poster in the end. But I'm still incorporating my second idea which is to insert a mirror in the middle of the toilet bowl.

My theme for the poster is to go for realistic but also kind of dramatic feel to the poster. I used the font Futura because it's a very bold type of font which I thought would suit best for my poster to bring out the intended message to viewers. I also decided to use the color red to highlight the message of the poster. Only after finishing the poster do I realize that the color schemes that I used actually matched Taylor's University's colors.
Where by my art direction is for audience to feel affected and reflect on their own actions in hope that it drives them to actually clean up after themselves. The mirror should also let the audience see themselves and think about who they are, how they wanted to portray themselves to people through their actions and etiquette of using the toilet responsibly as a matured individual.
