On today's class Mr. Kannan started introducing us to our next project which is matte painting, where in today's class he showed us a short tutorial on vanishing points and we were required to do a short exercise.

On the eighth week we moved on to start painting on Adobe Photoshop itself where Mr. Kannan showed us a few examples on how to do matte painting from the big chunks to details. Then we were asked to finish at least 5 initial ideas for the next class. I tried to do more than 5 so that I can have an idea on what I wanted to do for my matte painting.

As shown on the picture above are the thumbnails I did for my project 2.

On the second class of the week, I showed Mr. Kannan what I have and I was asked to choose which are the ones that I can give a hundred percent on and I was asked to start working on that one. Mr. Kannan also mentioned that I can actually combine the thumbnails that I have as well. So in the end since I was having a hard time choosing between the 7th and the 8th thumbnail, I decided to combine the two. However, I will need to look for a new perspective for that, but the basis of my idea will be from those two.

On the first class of the week, as mentioned last week, Mr. Kannan was expecting something more from us but apparently none of us really did anything so in the end, Mr. Kannan told us to stop the sketches and really start working on our project 2 where he just wanted one really good work that we put effort into. We were asked to start working on putting all the images together and try to create a clip on After Effects.
Since I need to really work systematically, I decide to practice a bit more on my matte painting and also for the project 2 that I will be working on and here are the sketches I came up with that I will be focusing on for my project 2.
Fig. 2.a. Final sketches for project
Currently I'm working on the second sketch where I just try to find the right stock images that I can use for the matte painting. Here's what I have so far as of now.
Fig. 2.b. Progress on matte painting
I'm still kind of lost as to how I should start putting all the images inside but I will be working on it further, obviously.

By the beginning of this week, I changed my plan and decided to focus on this sketch of mine.
Fig. 3.a. Final to be used
I tried to start looking for pictures to put in to my composition. And this is what I had for my progress for the next class.
Fig. 3.b. First draft
But after looking at it for a while, the perspective of the whole thing seems off so I was actually kind of stuck again on what to do. But I still tried to do retouches on my work.

For today's class, I showed Mr. Kannan my work, and he asked me to try and refine it then I can bring it to After Effects. But since in class, quite a lot still struggle with their own painting, so Mr. Kannan actually tried to do a quick painting for us and also to make it easier for us to refine our work.

So based on my idea, Mr. Kannan painted to show me what I can do for my composition and explained about the perspective and everything. This will be the painting that I will use to produce the matte painting for this project.

In class today, I showed Mr. Kannan what I have and he said that I'm getting there, I just need to change some of the colors and do more on After Effects itself. This is what my work look like before I bring it to After Effects.
Fig. 4.a. Look on project 2
I used a lot of images that I found online where I cropped some part, did some adjustments to the colors using Curves, Levels, and Hue/Saturation, etc. and basically just try to put everything together to make it look as real as possible. As for the shrine and the stone plate ground itself I created from pictures of shrines and stones that I found online as well. This work that I'm working on is actually quite tough because I have to play around with organic objects which doesn't really have a fixed shape so I had to try and blend it really well. But all in all it's still quite fun to play around with it (if you found the right pictures, that is). Mr. Kannan wanted me to animate the water and also find a video of a deer, which thankfully I did find a perfect one. I also add in some audio to make it feel more real, as well as adjustment layer to adjust the overall color, making it look slightly magical. Below is the final look on my project 2.
